Thanks for the suggestions, everyone. I ultimately decided on mediatemple's grid server package, and barring some very minor hitches it's been a pretty positive experience. @genehack, I checked out slicehost and the whole VPS thing scares the pants off me.

I’ve actually got a friend on Bluehost who is on the west coast — and it hasn’t worked out well for him. He’s wanted to jump ship to Dreamhost.

I highly recommend Bluehost. I use them for just about everything. The sites hosted there are crazy-fast, they have a fully featured CPANEL, you get lots of bandwidth and space for not a lot of money. I think my sites cost about $80/year for hosting, and I’m thankful for them.

I know nothing about these guys besides the fact they’re in the Tampa Bay area (from what I’ve gotten through pings). But http://www.webmasters.com/ might be something for you to explore. I’ve often looked for local hosting options for faster load for local users… So if that’s something that interests you, check with them.
