She Will Fight On the Beaches…

She will never surrender! Katherine Harris is scheduled to make a “major announcement” this week, and it’s not what everyone expected it was. According to the Washington Prowler:

…Harris very bluntly told them to forget about [dropping out]. When told they had strong interest from a well-known, respected former Florida elected official in jumping in, her response was that she welcomed the competition. When they responded that the GOP would begin to make fundraising more difficult, she revealed nary a frown.

To underscore that point, Harris told them that she would resign her House seat and privately finance her Senate campaign. If that “major announcement” is to come, we hear it is going to be that she is taking her campaign private, putting her money where her mouth is and focusing on the race full time.

She may not be the brightest bulb in the toolbox, but no one’s ever doubted that she’s got great big brass balls on her bedposts.

So who’s the “well-known, respected former Florida elected official” this source is referring to? My best guess is Bill McCollum, but it could be just about any former House member. Charles Canady, now a state judge, is well-respected but not a household name. Mike Bilirakis is well-known and respected but still in office. Porter Goss is both well-known and (at least formerly) well-respected, but seems to have his hands full with the spook business.

State level leaders? Frank Brogan is currently awaiting his next opportunity by serving as President of FAU. He’s possible. Former state House or Senate leaders? There are whole whole bunch of “well-known” among the qualified, but it’s hard to remain “well-respected” after leading that pack of wild dogs known as Florida legislators.
