SxSW Panel Proposals
I’ve got three:
Rage Against the Machine: RIAA Litigation Update

This session explores recent developments in the various cases nationwide and how someone caught in this driftnet litigation might defend themselves.

Addressing Obama’s Views on the Supreme Court
I haven’t been one to do video here, but I thought this well-presented opinion warranted an exception. A response to Senator Obama’s criticism of the recent partial birth abortion ruling by the Supreme Court:
This neatly sums up the debate between liberals and conservatives on the judicial function. Via RedState.
RIAA Gets Hit for $68,000 in Fees in Capitol Records v. Foster
In the great file-sharing war, it looks like the tide may be turning. Deborah Foster, the defendant in a peer-to-peer file-sharing case out of Oklahoma, not only got the records companies to dismiss their case against her, she got a court award of $68,000 for attorney’s fees - the cost of defending her lawsuit.

The End of Days: Google Calendar for Mobile Broken?
A few months ago, Google announced that its Calendar app would be accessible by PDA-based web browsers. It worked like a dream. And for someone like me, a lawyer on the go, it was a great tool.
Suddenly, sometime last week or so, it just stopped working. Instead of the nice neat rows [...]
What Passes for “Contact Info” These Days
I recently asked one of my clients to provide for me the contact information for a prospective witness. I got back name, last known address, and MySpace alias.
Good thing I know how to use that MySpace thing.
We Hold These Truths to Be Self-Evident
In honor of today, exercise your freedom. Make it stronger by learning something new about a candidate or issue that helps you decide how you, as one of The People, want from your elected leaders.
Then go have a beer at your neighborhood barbecue.
Yet Another iPhone Post
So I just went to the Apple Store to play with the demos. Some observations:
As one who loves to surf the web from anywhere on my Treo, I could get seriously enamored with the slick it’s-the-real-internet of the iPhone. Wow.
They’re flying off the shelves. This could be bigger than the iPod. [...]
Wetlands Policy and Sticks of Fire Do Not Mix
Jadell Kerr, a regulator with the Hillsborough County Environmental Protection Commission, has been suspended for two weeks from her six-figure job with the county due to comments she made on local blog Sticks of Fire. Tommy notes it here.
She said, of the county commission’s action to shift wetlands regulation from the county to the state, [...]
Funding the Michael Alex Wasylik Expressway to Nowhere: An Earmark of My Very Own
Courtesy of Redstate comes this very helpful how-to guide on getting federal funding for your own pet project through earmarks, written by the influential folks over at Venable, LLP.
You might have questions about the earmark process. The lobbyists have answers:
What can get earmark funding?
Just about anything for which the federal government provides [...]
Tear Down This Wall
Twenty years ago, Ronald Reagan stood at the Brandenburg Gate of the Berlin Wall, extolling the virtues of freedom and challenging the world to follow us. (over the objections of virtually the entire foreign service bureaucracy.)

Don’t Ski Yellow Snow
Justice Bedford:
After all, how many cases can be summarized by the Los Angeles Daily Journal as, “Government’s approval of ski resort to use recycled sewage effluent to make artificial snow on San Francisco Peaks violates Religious Freedom Restoration Act”?
That’s not even the good part.
What’s the Second Most Popular Boy’s Name in England?
Muhammad.
Still think immigration policy doesn’t matter? It does: it can change the shape of a nation.
Hat tip: Freaks.
In His Freezer
Finally! U.S. Rep. William Jefferson, indicted:
The charges came almost two years after investigators raided Jefferson’s home in Washington and found $90,000 in cash stuffed in his freezer.
In. His. Freezer. And they said Republicans were corrupt?
Congress May Tighten Computer Fraud Laws
Originally uploaded by CypherXero
According to Wired newly proposed legislation in Congress would lower the threshold for criminal prosecution (and, I think, for civil liability) for computer intrusion under the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, 18 U.S.C. ยง 1030.
Blogrolling: Recording Industry vs The People
RIAA Keep your Hands Off My iPod by (_nickd)
By the way, the site that led me to the previous post is a pretty good read if you’ve got a law degree and a strong sense of sticking it to The Man. Recording Industry vs The People chronicles all the [...]
Merl Ledford: Hero of the People
Some people think all lawyers are scum. Then, once every 13 years or so, a lawyer does something that makes everyone stand up and say, “Well done, my good man!”
This news is a couple of months old by now, but it still is worth re-telling that Merl Ledford is a hero for standing up [...]

I’d bet that Jerry Falwell is having an awfully interesting conversation with his Creator right about now.
Blogrolling: Fortuito.us
I’ll let Matt say it:
I recently realized there are a lot of people trying to make a living from blogging but there aren’t a lot of sites with basic business advice for people doing it. I figured maybe it’d help some people out if I wrote up how to find a good accountant or [...]
What’s In a Number?
Do you know the significance of this number?

It’s currently at the heart of a battle over First Amendment rights. Some think it’s hexed.
